Full-Lifecycle Lean Management for Vacuum load break switch: Achieving a 90% Drop in Failures and Significant O&M Cost Reductions

Project Overview

A 18kV distribution network in an industrial park previously operated over 30 vacuum load break switches (LBS) that suffered from a lack of full-lifecycle management. Issues included improper selection for industrial pollution environments, sub-standard vacuum interrupters, non-standard installation, and reliance on manual inspections. Within two years of commissioning, arcing and contact overheating were frequent. In 2023, a single unit failure due to vacuum attenuation caused a 6-hour blackout for three production lines, resulting in losses exceeding 400,000 RMB. Annual O&M costs reached 80,000 RMB, and equipment lifespan was estimated at less than 5 years.

Our company implemented the "Five-Ring Synergistic Lean Management Solution": customizing switches for industrial pollution (anti-pollution flashover structure + CuCr contacts + RTV coating), deploying a three-parameter intelligent monitoring system, and standardizing installation and green decommissioning processes. Post-upgrade results: 18 months of zero-fault operation, O&M costs reduced to 30,000 RMB/year (a 62.5% drop), expected lifespan extended to 10+ years, and power reliability jumped to 99.98%, firmly securing the industrial power supply.

  • Full-Lifecycle Quality Rigor: 15-year lifespan verification for core components + 100% factory inspection for vacuum levels ≤10-4 Pa + standardized installation torque + classified recycling for decommissioning (recovery rate > 95%), eliminating quality loopholes at every stage.

Empowering Infrastructure Development

This solution has been standardized into the "Technical Guidelines for Full-Lifecycle Management of Medium-Voltage Vacuum LBS" and applied at scale across 12 industrial parks in East and South China, as well as in high-altitude and coastal projects. To date, it covers over 500 units, averting 83 latent faults and saving over 3 million RMB in O&M costs. Through the "Design-Manufacturing-Installation-O&M-Decommissioning" five-ring synergistic model, we are driving equipment management from "fragmented maintenance" toward "full-lifecycle lean management," providing a reproducible Chinese practice for safe, green, and efficient power systems.
